RIVER OF FUNDAMENT

MATTHEY BARNEY’s exhibition at HAUS DER KUNST
(still on show till august 8)
bewilders the mind and body
iron, bronze, sulphur, salt collide, mutate, anodise, patinate or rust
the gigantic cast props feel like a material mythology from a new world
BARNEY  introduces recycling as a contemporary version of Egyptian reincarnation beliefs
cars replace humans but perform the same basal and near nauseous instincts
“Rhen”, “Khu”, “Ba”, “Djed” – the titles of works are all onomatopee’s
the lightness of these sounds seems to contradict
the boldness and physical weight of BARNEY’s sculptures
