Rethinking heritage and use The Streekmuseum Hoeksche Waard will re-open its doors next year and my studio is in charge of the exhibition design and strategic choices of this regional museum, whose collection consists solely of gifts from the inhabitants of the island. Gevraagd: Hulp voor in een grote tuin (Wanted: Help in a big garden) The project I proposed with Henriëtte Waal for the polder area De Bovenlanden in Het Groene Hart won the pitch. (Yeah!) In answer to the question of how to disclose the area on a mental and recreational level, we got into contact with local users, and produced a beautiful book with the help of graphic-designer-to -be Daphne Ouwerkerk. Atelier Sophie Krier welcomes Eline My new atelier & house nearby the Graafflorisstraat is not only a beautiful place but also a network hub. Eline Kunz, the perfect office manager I was looking for since a while, turned out to live around the corner. Eline is a production manager for film and events, works as a programmer for Oerol and is currently also working for the Karavaan. In the snapshot above Eline is doing a last minute spelling check with Henriëtte and Daphne slightly tense by her side...

ZWERVENDE ERVEN Vanaf vandaag is 3 weekenden lang de tentoonstelling 'Zwervende Erven' (Pers bericht) te zien in Fort Pannerden te Doornenburg. Aanleiding is een nationale prijsvraag waarvoor architecten, kunstenaars, vormgevers én amateurs uitgedaagd zijn om een voorstel in te dienen voor eeen tijdelijk verblijf, dat de bezoeker van de manifestatie volgend jaar zomer uitnodigt te genieten van de prachtige natuur en het rivierenlandschap. Het materiaal waarmee wordt gewerkt is klei en/of baksteen, rijkelijk voorradig door de aanwezigheid van de Rijn, de Waal en de Linge. Voor de gelegenheid hebben Mara Skujeniece en ik onze krachten gebundeld voor ons ontwerp getiteld 'Voorlopig', een voorstel voor een tijdelijk pad dat zichzelf met bemoeienis van wandelaars zal verplaatsen (of niet), een zomer lang, langs een aantal eveneens vergankelijke mijlpalen.

BLURRR TENT. viert dit najaar haar tienjarig bestaan en presenteert van 9 september tot en met 15 november 2oo9 de jubileummanifestatie BLURRR. KINNO TAMAGO Op 27 augustus opent in Galerie Axis te Tokyo de tentoonstelling Kinno Tamago (Golden Eggs), waarbij designLAB studenten hun ideeën voor een alternatieve samenleving presenteren in een denkbeeldige stad.De kern van de presentatie is de vraag welke houding ontwerpers zich aan moeten meten om op een vruchtbare manier met de wereld om te gaan. De kabouterlezing en -prijsuitreiking vormt het slot van de kabouterrevolutie: centraal staat de gedachte dat kabouters harde werkers zijn en - als niemand kijkt - zaken kunnen verwezenlijken die anderen niet, of niet zo snel voor elkaar zouden kunnen krijgen. De kabouter wordt als metafoor en middel gebruikt om kinderen uit Nieuw-Vennep en omstreken te laten meedenken over wat ze leuk vinden aan hun leefomgeving en te laten fantaseren over wat er nog ontbreekt voor hen. In de kabouterlezing worden wens en werkelijkheid met elkaar vermengd.

Economies of mind
Horge Pérez invited me to conceive a workshop at IED, Barcelona. The workshop will revisit issues I addressed in Warsaw with designLAB: Representing peculiar local habits and mémé in a model; using mimicry and scale to abstract one's findings; understanding the model's autonomous qualities and projecting these into a new entrepreneurial context. Traces of transition
A series of short video interventions in the city of Warsaw, designLAB's field studio for ten (cold!!) days during our annual wintergarden. In the videos the students investigate transition zones and lines of the city. All the workshop's results, including a collection of scale models of the city's qualities, will be published integrally in an upcoming issue of Sixweeksnotebook, edited by fundacja bęc zmiana, see www.funbec.eu. Shine on Sishane
The film documents the results of one week of fieldwork by designLAB students in the oldest light district of Istanbul. Our brief: to explore the qualities of the Sishane network in order to understand if and how it can transform itself, in the light of current political and economical threats. 'Shine on Sishane' is the first of a series of research projects in cities this year by designLAB, which is the design research laboratory which I run at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. I have started my research on the dynamics of today's duo’s in art and design. How do elements such as perspective, overlap, friction, misunderstanding influence the final, collective work? The research is done within the Professorship or Art and Public Space of the Rietveld Academy, which is led by Jeroen Boomgaard. Check www.lkpr.nl for more information on fellow researchers. Prendre la tangeante: pratiques d’aujourd’hui pour un design de demain
Paris based editor Dis Voir (www.disvoir.com) has asked me to curate the next "Collection Design" . In the next five years I will edit 10 books, each of which will address a specific way of doing design. The first one is due to be published in January 2009. It deals with the idea of "taking the tangent line", a french expression which more or less means "to make off", to "elude" the main way. It's also linked to the idea of drawing one's "ligne de fuite", one's "vanishing line". The book will feature contemporary projects from fashion, architecture and design.

Meeting the other
From today till March 18 I will be in Nepal to guide a cultural exchange project with Kathmandu Centre of Arts and Design, intiated with Erna Anema. Wintergarden: Making Rain

Het Wintertuinproject – dit jaar voor de derde keer georganiseerd – is bedoeld ‘om studenten aan het begin van het jaar te injecteren met nieuwe perspectieven, energie, ideeën en werkmethodes. Het is als een refresh-button’, aldus Sophie Krier, coördinator Design Lab. Rain/Regen is het thema van Wintertuin 2008, een experimenteel project waaraan drie afdelingen van de Gerrit Rietveld Academie meewerken: Studenten van TXT (textiel), Design Lab en Mode presenteren vrijdag 22 februari hun werk op de expositie ‘Making Rain’ in het Asscher-gebouw in de Pijp, Amsterdam.

Debat Design: toen, nu en morgen
Met Karin Daan en Sophie Krier. Moderator: Cornel Bierens. Initiatief www.ontwerpwerk.nl Onder de titel Design: toen, nu en morgen organiseert Ontwerpwerk een serie van 4 debatten over verleden, heden en toekomst van design. Elke avond staat een andere ontwerpdiscipline centraal: product vormgeving, visuele communicatie, vormgeving van de openbare ruimte en digitale vormgeving. Binnen de disciplines vragen we een bekende ontwerper van voor het digitale tijdperk en een jonge ontwerper met een duidelijk hedendaagse signatuur. Ieder vertelt over zijn/haar drijfveren en laat daarbij een aantal beelden zien van eigen werk en/of inspiratie. Na de pauze gaan zij onder leiding van een professionele moderator in discussie met elkaar en met het publiek. Hoe keken ontwerpers vroeger tegen hun vak aan? Wat is er veranderd? Wat zijn de verwachtingen voor de toekomst?

For the exhibition the Lungomare Gallery invited designers of different ages, places of origin and cultural affiliation who deal with the production and creation of objects, and asked them to submit an object of their choice, together with a biography of the object itself. My new studio, built with 3 sea containers!
The studio is located in the Heijplaat harbour area of Rotterdam inside Magazijn Marine, which used to stock spare submarine parts. My co-pioneers are: Krijn Christiaansen, Cathelijne Montens, Ontwerpers.nu, 2012 Architecten & Superuse.

Op 16 juni opent de expositie 'Hand on Movement - Crafted form in dialogue' in Lilljevalchs, Stockholm. Studio Makkink Bey heeft mij gevraagd om met mijn films een verhalende laag toe te voegen aan zijn expositie. Een vijftal van mijn 'Més-aventures' (een frans woordspel dat zowel 'mijn avonturen' als ''tegenvallers'' betekent) zal op, naast, tussen en onder Jurgen's werk verschijnen en verdwijnen, om zo een dubbele laag te geven aan het zichtbare. Buurtbanken voor Vissershop te Zaanstad
Op 22 juni viert Vissershop feest en worden vier Buurtbanken overgedragen aan de bewoners van deze kleine inham van de Zaan. De banken zijn een project van Studio Makkink Bey i.s.m. Sophie Krier. Het verdedelen van basismateriaal is een nijverheidstraditie in Zaanstad. Voor dit ontwerp zijn basisplanken intensief bewerkt tot rijke constructiedelen. De banken zijn plank voor plank opgebouwd tot gelaagde zitplekken aan de Zaan, steeds met een eigen kleur- en maatvoering.

10de editie Rietveld naar de Beurs Aankomend pinksterweekend (zondag 27 en maandag 28 mei) is er weer een editie van ‘Rietveld naar de Beurs’. Studenten en oud-studenten van de Gerrit Rietveld Academie presenteren en verkopen eigen, in oplage gemaakte producten in de Beurs van Berlage.Krijn Christiaansen en Kusters& Montens tekenen voor de inrichting. I am working on a new moving image (bewegend beeld) with the working title 'Zetel van het verstand'. It's going to be about my working process and it's related to the personality of the clown - his readyness to say YES no matter what, his intelligent use of stupidity, his talent for improvisation and his attention for the world that surrounds him.. Buster Keaton's slapstick is a precious inspiration source too. The image is by photographer Roel van Tour, who in his work documents reality as if it was a dream...

The website of Design Lab, the design department of the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, will officially be launched on Open Day the 26th of January. Guest designers Christiaansen en Montens have put together a mini exhibit of current projects with the students. I'm preparing a discussion around the dilemma of ornament, which will take place at one pm.
