Foncé feutré

Open Studio at Maaike Leyn yesterday – Maaike draws with charcoal on the back side of linen canvas. (Apparently Francis Bacon liked that side of canvas too, for its texture, another resident mentioned) It lends her drawings a mute, soft, melancholic darkness. In French I would describe it as: un foncé feutré.
